Understanding Dental Insurance and Terms

What is dental insurance?

Dental Insurance is a financial supplement that helps pay a portion of your dental treatment expenses. In most cases, it does not pay for your dental treatment in full. Dental insurances plans, most commonly, have a deductible and a $1,000 maximum per year.

What is a covered benefit?

Dental insurance plans commonly pay 80% - 100% of preventive dental treatment costs acquired every 6 months (minus a yearly deductible).

   Preventive Dentistry includes:

  • Dental Exam

  • Radiographs (x-rays)

  • Prophylaxis (dental cleaning)

  • Fluoride Treatment

Dental insurance plans commonly pay 50 % - 80% of periodontal treatment (gum disease treatment) and restorative dental treatment costs. These procedures will require a co-payment from you.

Periodontal Treatment (gum disease treatment) includes:

  • Deep Cleanings

Restorative Densitry (replacement of teeth) includes:

  • Dental fillings

  • Inlays / Onlays

  • Crowns / Bridges

Dental insurance plans DO NOT cover cosmetic dentistry and some restorative procedures:

   Cosmetic Dentistry includes:

  • Teeth whitening

  • Laminates

Restorative: Implant

*Some dental insurances plans DO NOT cover “white” composite fillings. They pay for, what is considered, an “Alternate Benefit” and use “Silver” amalgam pricing instead. The patient is then responsible for the remaining balance.

How do I know what my insurance plan will cover?

Your place of employment has purchased your plan from a dental insurance carrier. Your employer can make available a list of your covered benefits. If necessary, our office will gladly take the time to contact your insurance carrier in order to help you better understand the terms of your dental insurance.

When am I expected to provide co-payment towards my dental treatment?

Payment is expected at the time services are rendered.

*We accept cash, credit cards, and checks as forms of payment for treatment.
